Paul Hill
I was born in Birmingham, England in 1971. Before immigrating to South Africa in 1983 I had travelled to Italy, Belgium, France, Holland and Germany with my family. In 1989 I completed a commercial matric at Joubert Park Tech with distinctions in fine art and then completed a diploma in interior design.
In 1991 I started working for a commercial interior design company where I was employed for 3 years. As a part of a young team of
designers, I was responsible for my own projects from conceptual design through to completion. Here I gained experience through working on diverse projects consisting of franchised restaurants, cinema complexes,
theatres, car showrooms, commercial offices and boutiques in South Africa.
Towards the end of 1994 I moved to hotel design, where I was then employed for 2 years. Larger hotel projects were completed in groups as apposed to individuals being responsible solely for a project. I was mainly given the responsibility for conceptual and presentation work, and occasionally for the technical drawings and details when it came for my own areas within a project. However, on smaller projects such as commercial offices and hotel renovations my responsibilities would extend to the completion of the project. We worked mainly in Africa and Mauritius.
In 1996 I was approached by an Austrian based shop fitting company to set up an interior design department within their existing structure of 100 employees. On accepting their offer, I moved to Austria and was responsible for alldesign and internal development which included training employees in aesthetically designed presentation layouts, elevations and perspectives. We specialized in hotel, resort, restaurant and health & spa design, and had the opportunity of designing a casino in Russia as well as a large
nightclub in Switzerland.
My responsibilities extended to the overseeing of all details and finishes. After winning our first European competition in 1998, which was a 5 star luxury hotel in Bayern Germany, we travelled to America in order toexperience the vast variety of architectural styles.
After my contract was completed in 1999, I set up my own design agency in Austria, namely Paul Hill Designers. Besides having my own clients and projects in Germany, Italy, Poland and Austria, I provided conceptualand design work for other interior design companies, architects and shop fitting companies. During this time I worked closely with Georg Heuber of plan-form and also travelled to Spain to source materials and natural stone products specifically for a private client.
In 2004 I relocated to South Africa and I am currently contracting to a prominent architectural firm as a conceptual architectural illustrator. I get to experience the fun part of architecture, I conceptualize before budgets,materials and completion dates are put into place. Since returning to South Africa, I have travelled to Saudi Arabia in order to produce concepts for various high-rise offices as well as hotel and resort projects.
